In August 1975 Nathu Ram Puri set up the Environment Design Consultants and for the next 5 years worked with various post graduate teaching hospitals in London. In 1983 he acquired Skerritts, his previous employer, from Galliford Plc. It was this that kick started his acquisition spree. By 1989 he had achieved a turnover of £100 million and by 1999 had total sales of £300 million. Current sales of Group and associated companies are running at £700+ million a year.
In 1985 Nathu Ram Puri set up a Charitable Trust with an initial personal donation of £1 million to support employees and ex-employees of his group, residents of Nottinghamshire and people of Indian origin, especially those coming from areas near his place of birth in India. Although starting modestly, he is now considered a global player with business interests in UK, USA, Germany, Hungary, Poland, China and Malaysia.
In 1999 he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. He was asked to be a member of the
Governing Council of The University of Nottingham in 1998. He was the founding member of the Board of Greater Nottingham Training and Enterprise Council and served as its Deputy Chairman for three years. Nathu Ram Puri was involved in the setting up of Prince’s Youth Business Trust in Nottinghamshire and was its founding Chairman and continues to be a member of its Board. He was also a member of the Board of Nottingham Development Enterprise. He is the current, Chairman of East Midlands Indo British Trade Council.
