Madan Showan was born in Punjab, India and arrived in Bradford aged 12 without a word of English. Helping at his parents’ grocery shop taught Madan the practicalities of running a business, and soon Madan had implemented a highly successful Bradford-wide home delivery service for newly-arrived immigrants, the first of its kind in the area. After studying electrical engineering at college in Leeds, Madan enjoyed a career as an engineer before founding Empire EC, which includes EmpireDirect, the UK’s top online electrical store. The group now employs over 300 staff, with current sales at around £100m and growing. Management Today named Madan as “one of Britain’s top 50 entrepreneurs” in 2004. Madan is involved in supporting his local business community and has also supported charity initiatives for major disasters globally. He is married with two sons.
