Krishan Lal Kumar arrived in the UK with £33 in his pocket – on Coronation Day in 1953. After working on markets in Lancashire selling ladies’ stockings, he formed a fashionwear distribution company in 1958. Now known as Rajan Group plc, the Manchester-based company has a turnover of over £85 million and employs around 200 staff internationally.. The Rajan Group is now run by Lal’s sons Rajan and Sanjay, though Lal continues to play an active role. Lal is a regular contributor to charities both in the UK and in India. Amongst other accolades, in 1990 he received an award from the Duke of Westminster for raising the most funds in the North West for The Prince’s Trust’s ‘Business Challenge’.
