Sharmila Gandhi began her career in the voluntary sector in 1990, working for Community Service Volunteers (CSV) as a social action broadcaster, researcher and fund-raiser. She then became one of the first local authority Crime Reduction Managers at Newbury District Council, where she was the only Asian woman employee. In 1998 Sharmila became Community Safety Policy Officer at Bradford Council. In 2002 Sharmila was appointed Chief Executive of the Bradford Vision local strategic partnership, in which role she has been pivotal in turning around Bradford’s image since the 2001 disturbances as well as reducing deprivation and increasing community harmony. At the end of 2004 Sharmila will be leaving Bradford Vision to join her husband as a director of 2Aspire Ltd, a social enterprise that is currently expanding into Europe.
