South of Britain - 2006 Winner
Business & Commerce Excellence Award
NADIR LALANI
99p Discount Stores
Lalani opened his first grocery store in 1978, after working in the newsagent business. By 1985 he owned fifteen stores in London and then acquired the eighteen Europa chain. After selling the business he then brought Two Whistlestop outlets in railway stations and grew this to twenty seven stores before once again selling the business. He then moved into the discounting market and opened his first 99p Store which currently has forty eight stores nationwide with an annualised turnover of circa £100million. He plans to open a further twelve stores this year and a further seventy five stores over the next 3 years taking the company to approx £300million turnover and 150 stores.
