Bakhshish Singh Attwal was born in the village of Pharala in the Lyallpur district of Pakistan in 1921. Mr Attwal’s employment career began with the Indian Government Ministries and he made the decision to migrate to the UK in 1951, settling in Coventry.
In Coventry, the need to serve communities had become high and Mr Attwal led the front line and became an Ambassador in creating communities. In 1953, he became the President of the Indian Workers Association. It was also in 1953 that he decided to relocate to Leicester and through his hard work ethic found himself in a very wealthy position. In Leicester, Mr Attwal’s passion for serving his community carried on and he became a key figure in many public sector areas.
Some of Mr Attwal’s achievements include founding and chairing BS Attwall & Co Ltd, a leisurewear and knitwear manufacturing company; Chairman of Leicestershire Sikh Welfare and Cultural Society, Chairman of the Sikh Education Trust in Leicester, Ex-president of the Indian Worker Association as well as receiving an MBE for services to the community from Her Majesty the Queen.
Mr Attwal’s family are now working hard to continue the legacy began by their late father.
